Your North Brisbane Dreadlock Specialist. Relaxed, friendly, experienced and trained loctician.

I welcome you to the Dreadlock Connection……

Are you thinking about getting dreads? Many people say they thought about it for years before actually doing it. I did too! So I understand it can be a big decision and sometimes you need lots of information to help guide you….

When I create your new dreads I use a comb and crochet hook which is the most natural way to get dreadlocks made as it mimics the process your hair would go through if you left it to dread up itself, but speeds up the process. Hair is sectioned and then each dreadlock handcrafted one by one until your whole head is covered. The amount of individual locks varies depending on the size and shape of your head, your hair thickness and the look you are after. Hair also needs to be a minimum of 15cms long for dreadlocks. On hair shorter than this extensions may be your best option if you can’t wait for your hair to grow.

New dreadlock creation can be quite a lengthy process, my studio is in a comfortable air conditioned environment where you can chill and relax while I make dreads for you. Or we can just enjoy the fresh air. It really is a lovely day  and everyone says how quickly the time goes chatting away or enjoying the view. You can bring whatever you need including snacks (lots of snacks!) to help pass the time. How long it will take depends on how many dreads you are after, the thickness, length as well as your hair type.

The crochet hook method I use means you will end up with a high quality long lasting set of dreads that are low maintenance. I am very experienced in my artistry so I can guide you through the whole process. I also have dreads myself.  New dreadlocks do take time to fully mature but they will look great straight away.   You will be amazed at how quickly your new dreads start to change and develop. I would recommend seeing a trained loctician to have your dreads made as it can cost more to repair a set of poorly made dreads than to make them in the beginning. You can find me in North Brisbane half way between Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast.

My aim is for you to have long lasting and well made dreads, that you love and will continue to enjoy for years to come. Click through to see recent photo’s on Facebook. Please note that new dreads require regular maintenance…I have seen and worked on dreads that have not had maintenance after creation …the dreads can become very matted together and start to lose a lot of length, they can be repaired but may never be as neat as they could have been with regular maintenance.

I will advise you on how to prepare your hair for dreads, but basically hair dreads best when it is free of product residue including shampoo’s, conditioner’s and styling products and it is dry and clean.  It is preferable to use a residue free shampoo and no conditioner in your hair in the weeks before we make your dreads (for at least a few washes if you can to fully remove any build up).  Also start to wean yourself off daily washing to allow your scalp time to adjust to your new washing routine.

We can discuss your preferred style of dreads including the size of dreadlock you are after, type of ends (rounded/blunt or natural) and sectioning.   I will advise you on the most appropriate size dread for your hair type, it does differ with how much hair you have but ultimately it’s up to you.

Sectioning is important as it will impact the size of your mature dreadlocks.

I can also make extensions from synthetic hair,  human hair or wool, which I weave into your own hair to  add instant length. Extensions do last a long time but are not designed to last forever. How long they last will depend on how much care you give them.

To find out more about extensions and pricing go to my Extensions page.

I’ll give you all the information you need on how to care for your dreads – gained from years of experience working on clients dreads and also from experience with my own dreads.  New dreads need to be kept dry until they settle in a bit. Its best not to wash or wet new dreads for two weeks (minimum) after creation. After that its totally fine to regularly wash your dreads! When I create new dreadlocks for you I offer full support in the following weeks and months of your new journey.
Partial dreads can also be made and this is a gorgeous option as well. These can be positioned to be hidden or more visible. You can have a sneaky single dread made amongst your hair to bling up with beads or wraps or half a head of dreads….it’s up to you. Let your imagination run wild!

Am I too old for dreadlocks?

I get asked this question quite a bit and the answer is…..You are never too old for dreadlocks! You only have to do a quick internet search to find pictures of beautiful “older” people with silver dreads. I think they look great on all ages. I can even make you some grey or silver extensions to help get you the dreadlocks you may have wanted for years! Age is just a number…if you’ve always wanted dreads lets do it!
